about four years ago I was quite happy with my landscaping business building and maintaining edible gardens in the Adelaide hills.
Then I was asked by a client for a bush tucker garden. as you do i said sure no worries, little did I know that finding enough tucker plants to fill a front yard from local nursery's was to be quite a challenge. I rang and rang to no avail. then I heard about a bloke in the hills that propagated bush foods. so off I went looking for a bush food nursery that didn't exist.
I spoke to every one I met about my bush food dilemma until another client of mine said hey I think i got a warrigal green in my green house with the label still. Well low and behold there she was shiny and green and attached was a label from Quarmby bush foods and a phone number.
HA HA! I exclaimed. I called straight away and asked to buy some plants for a project I was working on and Mike replied
"yes you can buy them from nursery's mate"
"no" i said "I need to pick your brain please"
the next day I visited the Quarmby's private residents about half an acre which Mike had turned in to a native food nursery producing thousands of plants and Gayle's beautiful garden full of flowers and native edibles. The first thing Mike said to me was
"I am NOT interested in teaching the propagation of bush foods!"
to which i replied "na mate just want some plants and information please".
from there on in Mike and I became very good friends with love of good timber and edible plants, I just kept scullking about and chopping his wood fixing sky lights. one thing lead to another long story short and here we are.
CRIKEY! 4 years ago if you told me id be supplying Australia with fresh native produce I would have fallen over with laughter. Mike and Gayle have been dear friends and shared with me there life's work to witch I will be forever grateful. there be some big arse boots to fill.
